Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans at Chepauk were left scratching their heads as their team crumbled to a 50-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). But more than the loss, it was the decision to send MS Dhoni in at No. 9 that became the biggest talking point.

CSK’s chase of 197 started on a disastrous note, losing Ruturaj Gaikwad for a duck and slipping to 8/2 within two overs. Despite a steady 41 from Rachin Ravindra, wickets kept falling, making the target harder to reach. Yet, Dhoni remained in the dugout, even when the team was struggling.

The surprise came when Ravichandran Ashwin was sent in ahead of Dhoni in the 13th over, even though CSK needed over 16 runs per over. It was only in the 18th over, when the game was nearly lost, that Dhoni finally walked in. He played an entertaining knock of 30 off 16 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes, but by then, it was too late to change the outcome.

Dhoni vs Krunal Pandya – a battle of big hits
Though CSK’s chances were gone, the final over brought some excitement as Dhoni faced Krunal Pandya. On the second delivery, Pandya bowled a surprise bouncer, catching Dhoni off guard. But the veteran wasn’t done yet. On the next two balls, he smashed two massive sixes, proving he still had the power to thrill fans. He finished the over with a four, sending the crowd into a frenzy, even though the match had already slipped away. CSK ended with 146/8 in their 20 overs.

RCB’s disciplined bowling seals the win
RCB’s bowlers made sure CSK never got close to the target. Josh Hazlewood (3/21) struck early, while Yash Dayal (2/18) and Suyash Sharma applied pressure in the middle overs. Earlier, RCB’s batting was led by Rajat Patidar’s 51 and Tim David’s late cameo (22 off 8), taking their total to 196/7.

For CSK, the loss was painful, but the bigger concern remains their strange batting order. Should Dhoni have batted earlier? Could his experience have changed the game? These are questions CSK will need to answer as they move forward in the tournament.
