PCB bars Mohammad Rizwan from addressing media over betting probe

Islamabad: Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan has been refused permission by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to hold a news conference concerning ongoing investigations by the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA) into alleged involvement with online betting and gambling.

A reliable source stated that Rizwan approached the PCB twice last week seeking authorisation to address the press, but was denied the necessary clearance on both occasions.

Ever since he was recalled home mid-tour from England alongside senior teammates Imam-ul-Haq and Salman Ali Agha, Rizwan has been under intense public scrutiny following questioning by the NCCIA regarding online betting, gambling, and associated financial transactions.

Both Rizwan and Imam had their mobile phones confiscated during the second Test match at Lord's, with the devices currently undergoing forensic analysis by the NCCIA.

While the PCB has yet to issue a definitive public statement on the matter, the source noted that Rizwan sought permission to interact with journalists in an effort to clarify his position and address widespread speculation.

"Rizwan wanted the PCB to permit him to speak with the media and explain the situation to them, as he pointed out there was a lot of confusion and speculation about the matter," the source said.

Under standard administrative regulations, centrally contracted players are prohibited from addressing the media or issuing public declarations without prior authorisation from the board.

In contrast to Rizwan's public focus, his teammate Imam, who is also facing scrutiny over allegations of exaggerating an injury that kept him from batting in both innings of the Lord's Test, has maintained a low profile.

Imam has remained out of the public eye despite being summoned alongside Rizwan for questioning by the NCCIA on 9 September in Lahore.
