Back for MI: Suryakumar Yadav set to face RCB days after becoming a father

Suryakumar Yadav is confirmed to participate in the Mumbai Indians’ upcoming fixture against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) this Sunday, following the birth of his daughter earlier this week.
While there was marginal speculation regarding his status given the 48-hour window since the new addition to his family, Cricbuzz reports that India’s T20I captain has informed team officials of his intent to play. He is expected to arrive in Raipur this evening.
The determination of whether Yadav will continue to captain the side on Sunday remains contingent upon the health of regular skipper Hardik Pandya. Pandya was sidelined during the May 4 match against the Lucknow Super Giants due to back spasms. He underwent a fitness evaluation on Friday under the supervision of Ben Langley, MI’s head of sports medicine, and physiotherapist Nitin Patel. While Pandya did not participate in the team’s initial Raipur sessions, he is expected to undergo further assessment and training later today.
Playoff Ambitions
Despite a challenging season that finds them in ninth place with only three victories in 10 appearances, the Mumbai Indians maintain a mathematical path to the postseason. While 16 points typically serves as the benchmark for a top-four finish, current league parity suggests 14 points may suffice. To reach that threshold, Mumbai must secure victories in their four remaining matches.
Following Sunday’s game, the team's itinerary includes:
- May 14: vs Punjab Kings in Dharamsala
- May 20: vs Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens
- May 24: vs Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium
National Leadership Transition
In a surprising turn for international cricket, Yadav may soon be relieved of his duties as India’s T20I captain. Reports from NDTV indicate that the BCCI selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, is weighing Shreyas Iyer as a potential successor ahead of the tours to Ireland and England.
The proposed transition comes despite Yadav recently leading India to a T20 World Cup title. However, the Times of India suggests selectors have "run out of patience" regarding his recent lack of productivity at the crease. In the current IPL season, Yadav has managed just 195 runs across 10 matches. Furthermore, the 35-year-old is reportedly grappling with a persistent wrist injury that has caused significant discomfort during play.
The Case for Shreyas Iyer
Iyer has surged to the forefront of the captaincy discussion following a standout performance leading the Punjab Kings. Under his guidance, the Kings secured six wins in their first seven outings, while Iyer personally tallied 333 runs in nine innings.
Notably, Iyer has not featured in a T20I for the national side since December 2023. However, the BCCI is reportedly viewing him as a stable leadership figure to anchor a "gradual transition" as the board seeks to integrate younger talent into the national T20I roster following the conclusion of the IPL.
