Lords Test | ‘Maybe he can do some magic and come back strong’: Pope on Stokes' injury

On the opening day of the third Test at Lords, both England and India faced injury setbacks to key players. England captain Ben Stokes sustained a groin injury while batting, requiring medical attention on the field. Although he remained at the crease, he struggled visibly, especially while running between the wickets during his unbeaten partnership with Joe Root. Stokes ended the day on 39, while Root stood firm at 99*, guiding England to a solid 251/4 at stumps.
Meanwhile, India’s wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant injured his left index finger while attempting to stop a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah that strayed down the leg side. Though the injury initially seemed minor, Pant left the field for treatment, and Dhruv Jurel took over the wicketkeeping duties. The BCCI confirmed Pant’s injury through a social media update, stating that he was under the care of the medical team. However, they did not reveal details about the severity. Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy said he was unaware of further updates, noting that more information would be available the next day.
Despite the disruptions, England managed to stabilize their innings after early Indian breakthroughs. The partnership between Root and Stokes was key in regaining control. Teammate Ollie Pope expressed hope for Stokes’ recovery, emphasizing the importance of managing the captain’s fitness ahead of the remaining matches in the series at Old Trafford and The Oval.
Both teams now await medical assessments to determine the availability of their players for the rest of the Test. The outcomes of these injuries could significantly influence the direction of this crucial series, making the next few days vital for both camps.
