New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders added New Zealand opener Finn Allen to their squad after buying him at his base price of Rs 2 crore at the IPL auction, opening up the possibility of a new opening combination alongside Ajinkya Rahane for the upcoming season.

KKR were the first to enter the bidding for Allen, who was sold without any competition at his base price. The explosive New Zealand batter has previously worked with former Australia captain Shane Watson at San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket and arrives fully fit, currently in action for Perth Scorchers in Australia’s Big Bash League.

Allen offers KKR flexibility at the top of the order, with the ability to open the batting or keep wickets if required. The franchise also has young Angkrish Raghuvanshi as an alternative opening option, giving the team tactical depth.

Known for his aggressive strokeplay against pace and his improved game against spin, Allen could prove particularly effective at smaller venues such as Eden Gardens. His power-hitting ability aligns with KKR’s approach of building around match-winners and strong leadership.

The Knight Riders’ core includes Ajinkya Rahane, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Anukul Roy, Harshit Rana, Manish Pandey, Ramandeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Rovman Powell, Sunil Narine, Umran Malik, Vaibhav Arora and Varun Chakaravarthy, as the franchise continues to shape a balanced squad.

Allen’s IPL career so far has been brief. He was first picked by Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2021 as a replacement player and featured in two matches during the 2022 season, scoring nine runs at a strike rate of 75. Despite his limited opportunities in the IPL, Allen remains a highly regarded T20 batter globally, and KKR will hope he can make a bigger impact in his second stint in the league.
