Tears, sacrifices and sweat: The inspiring story of Sakib Hussain

Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Sakib Hussain has emerged as one of the standout performers of the Indian Premier League 2026, not just for his fiery debut spell but for a remarkable journey shaped by hardship, sacrifice, and the quiet resolve of his family from Bihar's Gopalganj district.
The story of the 19-year-old fast bowler gained widespread attention after an old interview video from his time with Kolkata Knight Riders resurfaced, reminding fans of the background he had to overcome to reach the IPL.

Coming from a modest farming family, Sakib's early days in cricket were marked by financial constraints, even for basic equipment. "Shoes are very expensive. Proper bowling spikes cost around Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. If we spend that much on shoes, then what will we eat?" he recalled in the clip.
His mother, who has stayed away from the limelight, narrated the emotional moment that led her to take a drastic step.
"He started crying, saying, 'Mummy, I don’t have shoes, how will I play?' We didn't have that kind of money. I had to sell my jewellery to somehow get him those shoes," she said, underscoring the extent of the family's sacrifice.
From Gopalganj to Chennai Nets
Sakib's journey started in Gopalganj, located about 125 km from Patna, where his family's livelihood came from farming. His father, who once worked the fields, had to stop due to a knee problem, forcing Sakib to take on more responsibility at a young age.

"Now I am the one who has to earn for the family. If I were ill, even arranging a single meal became something we had to think about," his father explained.
Cricket entered his life through local encouragement rather than structured coaching.
"There is a ground near us, so he used to go early in the morning for running. Some local coaches noticed him and told him to try cricket," his father recalled.
Sakib began with tennis-ball cricket, often travelling long distances -- sometimes up to 150 km -- for small match fees of Rs 500 to Rs 2,000. "From that point, I made up my mind that I had to pursue cricket," he said.
Rising Through the Ranks
His performances soon began to reflect his growing potential. Sakib made his T20 debut for Bihar in the 2022–23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he claimed 4/20 in just his second outing at the age of 17.

The following years saw him continue to impress, culminating in a five‑wicket haul in the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy, with figures of 6/41 against Arunachal Pradesh.
These displays caught the eye of IPL scouts, and at the 2026 auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad acquired Sakib for Rs 30 lakh.
The young pacer repaid the franchise's faith on his debut, playing a crucial role in Hyderabad's victory while defending a total of 217. After early breakthroughs left the opposition reeling, Sakib delivered under pressure, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and then breaking a threatening partnership by removing Donovan Ferreira, Jofra Archer, and Ravi Bishnoi in quick succession to seal the match.
Sakib Hussain's ascent from a small village in Bihar to the IPL stage is a testament to perseverance, family support, and the quiet sacrifices that often go unnoticed behind the glamour of India's premier T20 league.
His story now stands as an inspiration for young cricketers across the country chasing big dreams with limited means.
