Border-Gavaskar test crucial for Gambhir’s future as India’s coach

Gautam Gambhir’s journey as India’s head coach has encountered unexpected challenges, with results falling short of expectations. Known for leading Kolkata Knight Riders to victory in the IPL 2024, Gambhir’s entry into India’s coaching setup was highly anticipated. However, recent performances, including an ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka and a 0-3 Test sweep against New Zealand at home, have raised concerns within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his future in the Test arena.
As the BCCI monitors Team India’s progress, Gambhir’s performance in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia is set to be a defining factor. Gambhir’s position as head coach for Test cricket could be in jeopardy if India struggles against Australia. While the BCCI reportedly remains inclined to keep him in charge of the white-ball formats (ODIs and T20Is), a disappointing Test campaign Down Under may prompt a shift in red-ball leadership.
According to a report in Dainik Jagran, if the team’s performance in Australia proves unsatisfactory, the BCCI may consider appointing a specialist coach, such as VVS Laxman, to lead India in Test cricket. In this scenario, Gambhir would likely continue his role with the limited-overs squads, managing ODIs and T20Is exclusively. While Gambhir’s willingness to accept such a divided coaching structure remains uncertain, a closely contested Border-Gavaskar series might delay a final decision from the board.
Ahead of the Australia series, Gambhir engaged in an intense six-hour meeting with BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar and team captain Rohit Sharma on Friday. Discussions reportedly focused on India’s disappointing 0-3 Test series loss to New Zealand, analysing key factors contributing to the team’s performance.
