India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026: Political heat rises as BJP, Congress spar

New Delhi, Feb 15: The India–Pakistan T20 World Cup encounter scheduled in Colombo on Sunday has once again spilled beyond the boundary ropes, triggering strong reactions from political leaders across the spectrum.
While ruling party leaders expressed confidence in India’s chances, the Opposition questioned the timing and optics of playing Pakistan amid unresolved tensions. Left leaders, meanwhile, urged separating sports from politics.
BJP voices confidence in Team India
Several BJP leaders struck an optimistic tone, expressing certainty that India would dominate the high-voltage contest. BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal projected strong confidence, stating that India has repeatedly proven its superiority and would continue that trend on the cricket field.
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta echoed the sentiment, attributing India’s expected success to the backing of “140 crore Indians” standing behind the team.
BJP leader Ravindra Raina linked the matchday with Mahashivratri, offering prayers for India’s victory and describing the clash as a matter of national pride.
Uttar Pradesh Minister Sanjay Nishad also emphasised the emotional connection between sporting success and patriotic sentiment, saying wins against Pakistan carry exceptional significance.
JD-U anticipates a thrilling contest
JD-U national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad described the match as a marquee sporting event, expressing hope that India would deliver a decisive performance against Pakistan.
He highlighted the excitement among cricket enthusiasts and termed the clash a “thrilling encounter” that millions were eagerly awaiting.
Congress questions staging of the match
In contrast, Congress leaders objected to India playing Pakistan, citing security and diplomatic concerns.
Referring to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Congress leader Rashid Alvi argued that sporting engagements should reflect the broader geopolitical climate, stating that matches are meant to be played between friendly nations.
Senior Congress leader TS Singh Deo similarly questioned the logic of continuing cricketing ties in the absence of substantive diplomatic dialogue, asking why sporting fixtures should proceed amid strained relations.
CPI-M calls for keeping sports above politics
Taking a different stance, CPI-M leader Hannan Mollah welcomed the fixture and emphasised that sports should not be entangled in political disputes. He described cricket as a unifying platform, arguing that sporting exchanges represent a separate dimension of civil society.
Excitement builds in Colombo
Despite the political debate, anticipation remains high in Colombo, where fans from both nations have created a charged pre-match atmosphere.
Hotels, streets, and public venues in the Sri Lankan capital are witnessing heightened activity, with crowds expected to gather around the stadium hours before the toss.
More than just a match
As India and Pakistan prepare for another chapter in their storied cricket rivalry in Colombo, the build-up underscores how these encounters frequently transcend sport — becoming reflections of national mood, identity, and political discourse.
