IND vs USA T20 World Cup turns into meme match as fans troll both teams

Mumbai: India beat the United States by 29 runs in their ICC T20 World Cup opener at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Saturday, but while the bowlers sealed the win on the field, the real entertainment was happening online.

After the USA won the toss and opted to bowl, fans quickly noticed something familiar about the American lineup — several players had Indian roots. Within minutes, X, Instagram and WhatsApp were flooded with memes, jokes and one-liners, turning the match into what users called the “Aadhaar card vs Green Card World Cup.”

One viral post joked, “Ye log bas nani ke ghar ghoomne aaye hai, kha-pi kar chale jayenge” (They’ve just come visiting grandma — eat and leave). Another meme aimed at critics of Team India read simply: “Aankh khol ke dekh” (Open your eyes and see).

USA batters struggling against India’s bowling attack also became instant meme material. A popular post showed Bhishma Pitamah saying, “Maine toh lagta hai ghayal hone ke liye hi janm liya hai” — suggesting USA players were born just to get hit every over.

Politics also found its way into the joke game. One meme featured Amit Shah telling Jay Shah to go easy on the USA since a trade deal was just finalised: “USA se abhi trade deal nayi-nayi hai, ladkon se kehna thoda aaram se khele.” Others joked that India’s shaky batting might have been part of the deal too — “Was this also included in the trade deal?” and “Is this to please Trump?”

Even players not in the XI weren’t spared. A meme showing Shubman Gill and Sanju Samson chilling on the sidelines read: “When World Cup pressure is on… and it’s not on you!”

Indian-origin players in the USA team inspired the classic Spider-Man pointing meme — captioned “India vs USA today” — while another viral post borrowed a famous movie line: “Hindustan ke sabse bade dushman Hindustani hai,” joking about NRI bowlers troubling Team India.

As India wrapped up their win, fans agreed on one thing — the match delivered two results: points on the table and memes for the timeline.
