High-profile England players refuse IPL contracts: Report

With the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League set to commence this Saturday, a burgeoning injury crisis has left several franchises scrambling for last-minute replacements. However, according to a report by The Telegraph, the lure of the world’s richest T20 league has not been enough to entice England’s rising stars Jamie Smith and Josh Tongue.
Both players, who notably went unsold during the IPL 2026 auction in December with base prices of 2 crore and 1 crore rupees respectively, were reportedly approached to fill voids left by injured squad members. Despite the lucrative openings, the duo declined the offers, choosing instead to prioritise their fitness ahead of a congested international schedule.

The news follows the high-profile withdrawal of England opener Ben Duckett. Originally signed by Delhi Capitals for 2 crore rupees, Duckett opted to forgo his contract to ensure he remains in the "best possible place physically and mentally" for England’s home summer.
The national side faces a rigorous calendar, featuring three-Test series against both New Zealand and Pakistan, alongside a white-ball visit from India in July. Expressing his regret on social media, Duckett apologised to the Delhi franchise and its supporters, citing the need to focus entirely on his England commitments.
