England head coach Brendon McCullum is facing heavy scrutiny after another disappointing tour of Australia, where the Ben Stokes-led side lost the Ashes in just 11 days. The team’s struggles have reignited debate over McCullum’s aggressive “Bazball” approach. Former England spinner Monty Panesar suggested Ravi Shastri as a potential successor, pointing to his experience in leading India to two historic series wins Down Under. Panesar said, that beating Australia requires someone who knows their strengths and weaknesses deeply—mentally, physically, and tactically—and he believes Shastri fits that profile.

McCullum, appointed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2022 after a 4-0 Ashes defeat, initially injected new energy into England Test cricket. Partnering with Stokes, he guided the team to 10 victories in 11 matches. However, the side has since struggled to maintain that momentum, failing to win any five-match series against Australia or India, with 16 defeats in 33 matches. Currently, they trail 0-3 in the ongoing Ashes with two games remaining.

Despite the criticism, McCullum remains committed to the role while acknowledging that his future is beyond his control. Speaking to reporters in Melbourne, he said he will continue to focus on improving the team and learning from mistakes, while leaving decisions about his tenure to others.

He also emphasized the positives of the job, describing it as enjoyable and rewarding. He said he enjoys traveling with the team, playing exciting cricket, and getting the best out of his players. The legendary cricketer noted that decisions about his future are in other people’s hands but expressed pride in the progress made since he took over as England’s coach.

The debate around McCullum’s future continues, but he remains determined to guide the team and extract their best performance despite the setbacks. (With inputs from Agencies)
