As India gears up for the much-anticipated Test series against England, starting 20 June at Headingley, attention has shifted to the composition of the playing XI, particularly who will occupy the vital number three and four batting positions. The series on English soil marks more than just a high-stakes contest—it heralds a generational transition in Indian Test cricket.

Among those in the spotlight is Sai Sudharsan, the 23-year-old left-hander who is likely to make his debut in the series. He has enjoyed a meteoric rise following a standout IPL season with the Gujarat Titans, where he clinched the Orange Cap. Despite his T20 success, Sudharsan remains resolutely focused on red-ball cricket, embracing the format’s mental and technical demands with maturity beyond his years.

In an interaction with The Times of India, Sudharsan played down speculation surrounding his potential batting position. “I’ve always batted at the top for my state side, so where I bat isn’t a major concern for me. What matters more is contributing to the team and playing for my country’s pride,” he remarked.

That attitude reflects a growing sense of composure and clarity, both of which he attributes in part to his evolving rapport with Shubman Gill, India’s newly-appointed Test captain. The pair have shared several successful partnerships across formats, particularly during their time with Gujarat Titans, and Sudharsan holds Gill in high regard for his tactical intelligence and calm demeanour.

“Playing with Shubman has been a tremendous learning experience,” Sudharsan noted. “His ability to stay relaxed under pressure and his clarity in decision-making are qualities I look up to. We share a similar batting style — we both value running between the wickets, playing classical cricket, and being consistent. That understanding really strengthens our on-field chemistry.”

Gill’s influence has not been limited to tactics. Sudharsan credits him for enhancing his mindset, particularly when dealing with lean patches or navigating tough conditions. Their regular conversations about game awareness and technical adjustments have contributed to Sudharsan’s growth as a complete cricketer.

With the Indian team entering a transitional phase following the retirements of stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Sudharsan is expected to play a central role in shaping the team’s future. While speculation continues around whether he will slot in at number three or four, what is clear is his readiness to adapt and serve wherever the team needs him most.

Backed by a short but valuable stint in county cricket with Surrey, Sudharsan is well-acquainted with English conditions. His disciplined approach—reflected in his journaling habits and fitness routine—demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement.

With the form he has displayed and the head he carries on his shoulders, Sai Sudharsan may very well be the anchor India needs in its new-look Test line-up, not only for this series, but for the years ahead.
