From Kottakkal's narrow lanes to IPL stardom: The mentor behind Vignesh's dreams

Kottakkal: In the bustling streets of Kuzhippuram, Kottakkal, the news of Vignesh’s incredible achievement in his debut Indian Premier League (IPL) match has spread like wildfire. For his childhood friend, Muhammad Sharif, this achievement has been a moment of immense joy and pride, a joy that, as he put it, arrived even before Eid.
Sharif, a Khatib at the Darus Salam Mosque in Kuzhippuram, was brimming with excitement when he spoke about Vignesh’s remarkable debut, where the young bowler took three wickets. “I have no doubt, he will continue to conquer heights. He is a born player,” Sharif said, his eyes gleaming with pride.
The two grew up together in the small town of Perinthalmanna Kunnappally, where Vignesh, or "Kannan" as Sharif lovingly calls him, was a neighbour and playmate. It was Sharif, who first recognised Vignesh’s potential as a bowler, and played a crucial role in guiding him towards his cricketing career.
Reflecting on their childhood, Sharif recalls the days when they would play cricket on the narrow road near their homes, with plenty of love for the game. “We used to play cricket together. That was ten to thirteen years ago. I was learning cricket from Coach P.G. Vijayakumar sir, but Kannan, who had never formally trained, played better than us. He amazed me with his ability to spin the ball using the ring finger of his left hand,” Sharif said.
Recognising the hidden talent in Vignesh, Sharif took the initiative to introduce him to Coach Vijayakumar, who agreed to take Vignesh under his wing. With the approval of Vignesh's parents, the two friends began their journey in the world of cricket, attending the camp together for two to three years.
Sharif, however, soon made the decision to step away from cricket to focus on his spiritual path, becoming a Khatib. Vignesh, on the other hand, continued to pursue his passion for cricket, playing in various under-14 and under-16 tournaments. Sharif recalls receiving a heartfelt message from Vignesh when he was selected to play for Mumbai Indians in this IPL.
“Immediately after his debut match, I heard that Dhoni had praised him,” Sharif said, his voice filled with admiration.
Despite being occupied with the special prayers at the mosque during the lead-up to the festival of Eid, Sharif was unable to watch Vignesh’s debut IPL match. “I’ve been busy with the special prayers at the mosque for the past ten days, but will catch up after Eid,” he shared.
It has been over two years since Sharif took up his role as the Khatib at Darus Salam Mosque.
