New Delhi: The BCCI made an embarrassing mix-up on the opening day of the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy, confusing Mumbai brothers Sarfaraz Khan and Musheer Khan on its official scorecard.

The error occurred during Mumbai’s match against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar, where the BCCI website initially showed Sarfaraz Khan as the opening batter who was dismissed for a duck by Auqib Nabi. The mistake surprised fans, as Sarfaraz is a middle-order player and not known to open the innings.

It was later clarified that it was Musheer Khan, Sarfaraz’s younger brother, who had actually opened the batting and fallen for a three-ball duck. The board later corrected the scorecard, but only after the confusion had spread among viewers. Sarfaraz eventually came out at No. 5, his usual position.

Following Musheer’s early dismissal, Ayush Mhatre (28) and Ajinkya Rahane (27) added 61 runs for the second wicket before both were dismissed in quick succession. Sarfaraz contributed a solid 42 off 48 balls, hitting six boundaries and a six before being run out. By stumps, Siddhesh Lad (86)* and Shams Mulani (23)* had taken Mumbai to 302/5.

The 91st edition of the Ranji Trophy, India’s premier red-ball tournament, began on Wednesday with 38 teams competing nationwide. The season will conclude on February 24, 2026. Vidarbha, who defeated Kerala in last season’s final, enter as defending champions.

Mumbai, India’s most successful domestic side with 42 Ranji titles, have begun their new campaign aiming to extend their record further.
