Determined to prove a point, UDF retains hold over Kottayam

Kottayam: In a significant turn of events, the UDF has managed to retain its hold on a crucial seat while delivering a body blow to LDF in Kottayam. This victory comes as a sweet revenge for the UDF, particularly after losing an MP when Thomas Chazhikadan's party, the Kerala Congress (M), switched allegiance to the LDF.

The loss of Kerala Congress (M) did not deter the UDF, as they successfully defeated the same party that stood with their rivals. This victory was a double blow to Jose K Mani and his associates, especially as the winner was Francis George from the Joseph Group.

During the election campaign, the focal point of debate was the battle for Kottayam. Jose K Mani, who was convinced that the UDF's previous success was because of its alliance with Kerala Congress (M), believed that the constituency's dynamics would remain in their favour. However, this belief faltered, as the two-leaf symbol failed to garner the expected support.

This victory for UDF can also be attributed to their efforts to rectify the shortcomings from the previous assembly elections. The recent Puthuppally by-election played a crucial role, prompting senior Congress leaders to reorganise booth committees and strengthen grassroots support across all constituencies.

The collaborative efforts of all MLAs contributed significantly to Francis George's success. The success is also a personal win for MLA Mons Joseph. The concerns raised by Saji Manjakadam did not sway the voters, reflecting the solid support for UDF in Kottayam.
