Croatian legend Luka Modric becomes oldest player to score at European Championship

Leipzig: Croatia's Luka Modric, despite receiving accolades and setting records, found little solace in his achievements after what might have been his final appearance at a major tournament.
Modric etched his name in history at the European Championship by becoming the oldest goal-scorer ever at the age of 38 years and 289 days. His goal against Italy in the 55th minute was a rebound effort, swiftly following a missed penalty against goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The goal broke the previous record held by Ivica Vastic since Euro 2008.
However, Italy's late equaliser in the eighth minute of stoppage time dashed Croatia's hopes, sealing their exit from Euro 2024 unless a series of improbable results swing in their favour.
Despite the disappointment, Modric was honoured with standing ovations from fans when he was substituted in the 80th minute, and again during the post-match press conference, where he was praised by an Italian journalist for his remarkable career. Moved by the sentiment, Modric expressed his desire to continue playing for as long as possible, despite knowing that retirement looms on the horizon.
While Modric extended his contract with Real Madrid earlier this year, continuing a decorated tenure since 2012, he remains deeply committed to representing Croatia, having amassed 178 appearances since his international debut in 2006 under Zlatko Kranjcar. As the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner, Modric has been a stalwart in five European Championships, scoring four goals in 16 appearances. However, his crowning achievement remains leading Croatia to the 2018 World Cup final and a third-place finish in 2022.
Reflecting on the heartbreaking draw against Italy, Modric lamented the cruelty of football but emphasised Croatia's resilience and unwavering effort on the field. Despite the likely elimination from Euro 2024, he expressed pride in the team's performance and dedication to representing their nation.
"Football can be cruel," Modric admitted. "Losing in such a manner is very difficult. It's hard to find words to describe how my teammates and probably the fans feel as well. But we must bounce back."
As Croatia's captain and a symbol of their footballing spirit, Modric concluded, "We gave everything for Croatia, and this is how Croatia presents itself, regardless of the heartbreak of this result. We deserved more, but in football, the outcome can be harsh. Nevertheless, we can be proud of how we represented Croatia."
