Munich: Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente described 16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal's performance in their Euro 2024 semi-final victory over France as "like watching a genius." Yamal's stunning goal equalised Randal Kolo Muani's opener for Les Bleus, before Dani Olmo secured Spain's win.

Awarded the player of the match, Yamal made history as the youngest-ever male goalscorer in the Euros. De la Fuente praised Yamal's talent and maturity, emphasising the need to guide him with humility and keep his focus grounded.

"We have witnessed a genius, born from genius," De la Fuente told reporters. "He's a player we must nurture—I advise him to maintain his humility and stay grounded. His growth and attitude at such a young age are remarkable."

Reflecting on Spain's journey, Yamal debuted as the competition's youngest player against Croatia, contributing three assists en route to the final. Spain will face either England or the Netherlands in the Berlin final on July 14, the day after Yamal turns 17.

De la Fuente also commended the entire team, singling out Dani Olmo for his crucial contribution. "We've talked a lot about Lamine, but I have 26 excellent players," he continued. "I know Olmo well and his potential—he has my gratitude too."

Taking over after Spain's shocking exit in the World Cup 2022 round of 16, the 63-year-old coach praised his team's commitment in thwarting Kylian Mbappe and company. "This team always believes," he said. "They are exceptional individually but work together for the team's good."

Following the game, there was an incident involving striker and captain Alvaro Morata during celebrations, where he was inadvertently struck by a stadium worker. De la Fuente reassured that Morata's injury appeared minor, defending him against recent criticism in Spain.

"On and off the field, there are few like him," De la Fuente emphasised. "He gives everything we need, sacrifices himself, and shows his greatness in the dressing room—a truly exceptional human being. He deserves to be remembered as one of Spain's football legends."

Overall, De la Fuente expressed pride in his team's values and unity, underscoring their generosity and collective spirit. Spain's journey in Euro 2024, propelled by young talents like Yamal and seasoned leaders like Morata, continues to inspire confidence and admiration. AFP
