Who is Zohran Mamdani? Filmmaker Mira Nair’s son who stunned Trump’s camp in New York

New York: Zohran Mamdani has been projected the winner of the New York City mayoral election, according to the Associated Press, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo in one of the most closely watched races in recent years. The 34-year-old Democratic socialist will become the first Muslim mayor to lead America’s largest city, marking a generational and ideological shift in its political landscape.
Trump-backed Cuomo defeated
Mamdani’s victory comes as a major blow to the conservative camp. Despite backing from former US President Donald Trump and several political heavyweights, Andrew Cuomo—who had resigned as governor four years ago following sexual harassment allegations—failed to regain footing against the rising progressive star.
The mayor-elect ran as both a Democrat and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). His campaign focused on affordable housing, police reform, and economic justice—issues that resonated strongly with working-class and minority voters.
Who is Zohran Mamdani?
Born in Kampala, Uganda, and raised in New York, Mamdani is the son of celebrated Indian-origin filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani. Before entering politics, he worked as a housing counsellor and community organiser in Queens, where he still resides.
Mamdani began his political career in 2021 when he was elected to represent the 36th district of the New York State Assembly. There, he became known for his outspoken advocacy on tenants’ rights, climate policy, and social equality.
A progressive victory rooted in activism
Observers say Mamdani’s grassroots organising and youth-driven campaign were key to his success. His message of inclusion, economic fairness, and “governing with compassion” drew wide support across New York’s diverse communities.
Reacting to his victory, Mamdani told supporters in Queens, “This campaign was never just about one election — it was about proving that working people can govern this city with compassion and justice.”
A historic first for Muslim representation
Mamdani’s win makes him the first Muslim mayor in New York City’s history and a rare example of a socialist politician winning a major US city office. His election is being hailed by progressives, South Asian groups, and Muslim communities across the country and abroad.
He will succeed outgoing Mayor Eric Adams and is expected to be sworn in early next year. Analysts predict his administration will prioritise economic equity, affordable housing, and climate resilience—issues at the heart of his campaign.
