Former Canadian health minister Kamal Khera has been appointed as Canada's Consul General in Los Angeles, taking on a key diplomatic role as Ottawa seeks to strengthen ties with the United States during crucial trade negotiations.

Canada appoints former health minister Kamal Khera to lead its Los Angeles mission as Ottawa looks to deepen diplomatic and trade ties with the United States.

Former Canadian Health Minister and Indo-Canadian politician Kamal Khera has been appointed as Canada's new Consul General in Los Angeles, marking a significant return to public service after her defeat in the 2025 federal election. The appointment comes as Canada reshapes its diplomatic team in the United States amid evolving trade negotiations and growing bilateral cooperation.

Kamal Khera takes up key diplomatic role

Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand announced Khera's appointment as part of a wider diplomatic reshuffle involving four new Consuls General across major US cities.

Khera will replace Zaib Shaikh, who previously served as Canada's Consul General in Los Angeles. In her new role, she will represent Canadian interests across Southern California, strengthen political and economic partnerships, promote trade and investment, and provide support to Canadian citizens and businesses.

Following the announcement, Khera said she was honoured to join Team Canada in the United States and looked forward to working closely with Canada's ambassador in Washington to further strengthen the Canada-US relationship.

From nurse to cabinet minister

Before entering politics, Kamal Khera worked as a registered nurse specialising in oncology and palliative care. She was first elected as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Brampton West in 2015, becoming one of the youngest women elected to Canada's Parliament.

Her healthcare background helped shape her political career, particularly in areas related to public health and social welfare.

A decade in government

During her ten years in Parliament, Khera held several important cabinet positions under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and later Prime Minister Mark Carney.

She served as:

  • Minister of Seniors (2021–2023)
  • Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities (2023–2025)
  • Minister of Health (2025)

Throughout her ministerial career, Khera worked on policies related to healthcare, seniors' welfare, diversity, accessibility and inclusion.

Election defeat did not end her public service

Despite being an experienced cabinet minister, Khera lost her Brampton West seat in the 2025 federal election to Conservative candidate Amarjeet Gill.

She was the only cabinet minister to lose her constituency during an election that nevertheless returned the Liberal Party to power under Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Her appointment as Consul General signals the Canadian government's continued confidence in her leadership and administrative experience.

Appointment comes during crucial Canada-US negotiations

Khera's appointment arrives at an important moment for Canada-US relations.

The two countries are engaged in negotiations over the future of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) after Washington declined to extend the current trade framework on July 1.

As Consul General in Los Angeles, Khera is expected to play an important role in supporting trade, investment and diplomatic engagement between Canada and the United States, particularly with businesses and institutions in Southern California.

Wider diplomatic reshuffle announced

Alongside Khera's appointment, Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced several other senior diplomatic postings in the United States.

Andrea Clements has been appointed Consul General in Detroit, Claire Kennedy will head the Chicago mission, while Susannah Pierce will serve as Consul General in New York.

Meanwhile, Indo-Canadian diplomat Rana Sarkar continues as Canada's Consul General in San Francisco, a position he has held since 2017.

Why the appointment matters

Kamal Khera's appointment reflects Canada's strategy of placing experienced political leaders in influential diplomatic positions. Her background in healthcare, cabinet leadership and public policy is expected to strengthen Canada's engagement with one of its most important international partners.

With trade discussions, economic cooperation and diplomatic coordination becoming increasingly significant, Khera's new role is likely to play an important part in advancing Canada's interests in the United States while supporting Canadians living, travelling and doing business in Southern California.
