Washington: The United States has upgraded its travel advisories for Bahrain and Qatar to Level 3 following the launch of US combat operations in Iran, citing heightened security risks and potential travel disruptions across the Middle East.

The US State Department updated its Bahrain Travel Advisory on February 28, authorising the departure of non-emergency US government personnel and their families due to safety concerns. The advisory was raised from Level 2 to Level 3, urging Americans to reconsider travel to Bahrain because of terrorism and armed conflict.

The advisory highlights:

  • Ongoing threats of drone and missile attacks from Iran following the escalation on February 28.
  • Significant disruptions to commercial flights in the region.
  • Persistent plotting by terrorist groups, with attacks potentially occurring with little or no warning.

Similarly, the Qatar Travel Advisory was raised to Level 3 on March 1, up from Level 1, reflecting comparable security concerns. Non-emergency personnel and their families are also authorised to depart Qatar. The advisory cites:

  • The threat of armed conflict is linked to US-Iran hostilities.
  • Risks to civil aviation, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issuing Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Special Federal Aviation Regulations (SFARs) covering the region, including Qatar.
  • Potential travel disruptions due to political and military tensions.

Earlier, the State Department issued a global caution alert, warning Americans worldwide — especially those in the Middle East — to follow guidance from the nearest US embassy or consulate. The alert advised that travellers may face airspace closures and urged heightened vigilance.

Both advisories recommend that US citizens:

  • Enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
  • Monitor local news and official updates.
  • Develop emergency communication plans.
  • Review country-specific security reports before travelling.

Level 3 advisories, labelled “Reconsider Travel”, indicate serious risks to safety and security. They fall just below Level 4, which advises Americans not to travel under any circumstances.

The recent advisory updates underscore ongoing regional instability and highlight the risks to travellers in Bahrain, Qatar, and neighbouring areas amid escalating tensions with Iran.
