‘If you drop out...’ US embassy warns Indian students; Follow visa rules or risk future ban

The US embassy in India issued a stern advisory on Tuesday, urging Indian and other international students in the United States to strictly comply with visa regulations.
Shared on social media platform X at 11:28 IST, the message highlighted that failing to maintain one’s student status could lead to visa revocation and future ineligibility for US visas.
This advisory comes at a time when thousands of Indian students are enrolled in American universities. The embassy underlined that maintaining legal student status is not only essential for completing academic programmes but also plays a critical role in shaping future academic and professional prospects in the United States.
Accompanied by an official graphic bearing the US embassy India logo, the warning specifically listed behaviours that could result in visa revocation. These include dropping out of a programme, skipping classes, or leaving a course of study without informing the respective educational institution.
"If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your program of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked," the post stated clearly. The repercussions of such violations are not limited to immediate visa cancellation; they may also hinder future attempts to secure any type of US visa.
The warning aligns with regulations governing the F-1 visa, which mandates international students to uphold a full course load and consistent attendance as per the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Breaching these conditions can lead to expulsion from the SEVP system and loss of legal status in the country.
The embassy further advised students to remain proactive in following visa requirements. "Always adhere to the terms of your visa and maintain your student status to avoid any issues," the advisory read. Students were reminded to attend all classes, make satisfactory academic progress, and promptly report any academic or personal issues to their Designated School Official (DSO).
With the growing number of Indian students in the US, the embassy’s warning serves as a critical reminder to stay compliant, avoid risks to their visa status, and safeguard their educational and professional future in the United States.
