Washington: Prominent US Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday issued a blistering condemnation of President Donald Trump’s latest ultimatum to Iran, characterising his threat to destroy the nation’s "civilisation" as an unhinged and potentially criminal provocation.

The backlash followed a social media post by the president in which he warned that "a whole civilisation will die tonight" if Tehran does not meet his midnight deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The rhetoric has intensified concerns on Capitol Hill regarding the legality and humanitarian cost of the expanding conflict.

Leadership Denounces ‘Madness’

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer led the criticism, calling into question the president’s mental state and holding his Republican colleagues accountable for the administration’s military posture.

“This is an extremely sick person,” Schumer stated. “Each Republican who refuses to join us in voting against this wanton war of choice owns every consequence of whatever the hell this is.”

In the House, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed the call for legislative intervention, urging Republicans to break ranks and assist in curtailing executive war-making powers.

“Congress must immediately end this reckless war of choice in Iran before Donald Trump plunges us into World War III,” Jeffries said. “It’s time for every single Republican to put patriotic duty over party and stop the madness. Enough.”

Allegations of War Crimes

Several lawmakers emphasised that targeting a civilisation or civilian infrastructure constitutes a violation of international law. Congressman Jason Crow, a combat veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee, argued that such threats place a moral and legal burden on the military hierarchy.

“Calling for the elimination of a civilisation is a war crime,” Crow stated. “As I’ve repeatedly said, our military must only follow lawful orders. Every American of good conscience must repudiate this.”

Congressman Jim McGovern also appealed directly to the military leadership, urging the Joint Chiefs of Staff to resist any directives that would breach federal or global statutes.

“This is pure evil. The President of the United States’ genocidal threat to commit war crimes is illegal under federal & international law,” McGovern said. “The U.S. military swears an oath to the Constitution, not the president. @thejointstaff is required to disobey any & all illegal orders. @SpeakerJohnson must immediately call Congress back to Washington & rein in this mad president."

Constitutional Standoff

The legislative outcry marks a deepening divide over the 2026 Iran conflict, which began Feb. 28 without formal congressional authorisation. While the White House maintains that the president has the authority to protect global energy transit and respond to Iranian "extortion," Democrats have intensified their push for a War Powers Resolution to force a cessation of hostilities.

As the midnight deadline looms, the Pentagon has confirmed that strike packages are prepared for a "wide wave of attacks," while the State Department continues to insist that a diplomatic resolution remains possible only if Iran capitulates to all U.S. demands.
