Black smoke over Moscow: Video captures Ukraine’s biggest drone attack on Russia in months

# News Desk

Kyiv: Moscow witnessed one of the most dramatic scenes of the war in recent months after a large-scale Ukrainian drone offensive targeted the Russian capital and its energy infrastructure.

Thick black smoke rose above the city skyline following a strike on the Moscow Oil Refinery, while residents in several districts reported an unusual phenomenon described as "black rain" — droplets carrying oily particles that allegedly fell on vehicles and clothing.

Although Moscow authorities denied reports of oil-contaminated rain, officials advised residents in affected areas to keep windows closed and urged vulnerable groups, including children and the elderly, to temporarily leave smoke-affected zones.

The images quickly spread across social media, showing flames, smoke plumes and damaged refinery infrastructure, bringing the realities of the war closer to Russia’s capital than at any point in recent months.

Ukraine targets Moscow’s energy lifeline

The strike marked the second attack on the Moscow Oil Refinery within a week. Located roughly 15 kilometres from the Kremlin, the facility is one of Russia’s most important fuel-processing plants and supplies a significant share of fuel consumed in the Moscow region.

The attack disrupted operations at several Moscow airports, forcing temporary flight restrictions and causing travel delays. While Russian air defence systems intercepted hundreds of incoming drones, authorities acknowledged that multiple targets were still struck.

Ukraine has increasingly focused on Russian oil facilities, arguing that energy infrastructure helps finance Moscow’s military operations and should therefore be considered legitimate wartime targets.

Zelenskyy links strikes to pressure campaign

The attacks coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s diplomatic engagements with Western leaders in Europe.

Kyiv has framed the growing drone campaign as an effort to increase pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and demonstrate that the consequences of the conflict can also be felt inside Russia.

Ukrainian officials argued that Russia has subjected Ukrainian cities to years of missile and drone attacks, and that Moscow should not expect immunity from similar disruptions.

The strikes also came as Ukraine continued seeking military and diplomatic support from allies during high-level international meetings.

Russia claims hundreds of drones intercepted

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, air defence systems intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones during the overnight offensive, including a large number approaching Moscow.

Russian officials reported damage to residential buildings and infrastructure in the wider Moscow region. Several civilians were reportedly injured after drone debris fell in populated areas. Authorities maintained that fuel supplies remained stable despite concerns about disruptions and shortages in some regions.

Fresh Russian strikes hit Ukrainian cities

Russia responded with renewed attacks across Ukraine, continuing the cycle of escalation between the two countries.

Ukrainian authorities reported casualties and injuries in regions including Sumy, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Residential areas and civilian infrastructure were among the locations affected by the strikes.

An eight-year-old girl was reported killed in Pavlograd, while several children were among those injured in attacks elsewhere in the country.

The exchanges highlighted how the conflict continues to expand beyond traditional battlefield zones, affecting civilian populations on both sides.

Civilian ships struck in Black Sea

Ukraine also accused Russia of targeting civilian vessels in the Black Sea.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russian drone strikes hit two commercial ships sailing under foreign flags, killing one crew member and injuring several others.

Kyiv described the attacks as a threat to international trade, maritime security and global food supply chains, while arguing that Russia continues to pressure shipping routes connected to Ukrainian ports.

The vessels reportedly resumed their journeys after the attacks despite sustaining damage.

War enters a new phase

The latest attacks underline how both Russia and Ukraine are increasingly carrying the conflict far from the front lines.

Ukraine’s expanding long-range drone capabilities have allowed it to target strategic facilities deep inside Russian territory, while Moscow continues large-scale missile and drone strikes across Ukraine.

As diplomatic efforts continue alongside military escalation, the images of black smoke over Moscow and fresh destruction across Ukrainian cities suggest that neither side is prepared to ease pressure on the other in the immediate future.
