Abu Dhabi: In a notable diplomatic gesture, a formation of F-16 fighter jets from the United Arab Emirates escorted the aircraft of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as it entered the nation’s airspace on Friday.

The Prime Minister arrived in the Gulf state for a brief visit, marking the initial stop of a five-country international tour that will also include four European nations. Upon landing at the Abu Dhabi airport, Modi was met with a full ceremonial welcome and received personally by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

During their formal meeting, Modi expressed his gratitude to the Emirati leader for the aerial welcome and the personal reception at the airfield.

"The way your air force escorted me today is an honour for the people of India," Modi told the President. "For quite some time, we had been speaking over the phone, but I was eager to meet you personally. I am very happy to meet you today."

According to the state-run WAM news agency, the military formation intercepted the Prime Minister’s plane as it crossed into the country's territory. The squadron leader reportedly requested formal permission to accompany the aircraft to the airport as a sign of hospitality.

The Prime Minister later took to social media to reiterate his appreciation for the warm reception, which officials say highlights the strengthening partnership and friendship between India and the UAE.

"I thank my brother HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, for the special gesture of receiving me at Abu Dhabi airport," Modi stated.
