The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine, supersonic multirole fighter aircraft originally developed in the United States by General Dynamics and later produced by Lockheed Martin.

Conceived in the 1970s as a lightweight air-superiority day fighter, the aircraft was designed for high manoeuvrability, advanced avionics and cost-effective operations. Over time, it was upgraded into an all-weather multirole platform capable of carrying out air-to-air combat, ground attack and precision strike missions.

Production of the jet began in 1976, and more than 4,600 units have been built, making it one of the most widely used fourth-generation fighter aircraft in the world.

The Turkish Air Force inducted its first F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft in 1987, marking the beginning of a long-term modernisation of its fighter fleet.

Subsequently, the jets were manufactured domestically under the multi-phase Peace Onyx programme. In 2015, the fleet underwent a comprehensive upgrade to the Block 50/52+ standard under the Common Configuration Implementation Program (CCIP), carried out by Turkish Aerospace Industries, enhancing avionics, radar systems and combat effectiveness.
