Trump's third TikTok deadline extension amidst data security concerns

Washington: President Donald Trump is set to extend the deadline for TikTok's sale for the third time, granting a 90-day reprieve beyond the June 19 deadline. This move allows the popular social media platform to continue operating in the US while the administration works towards a deal to bring TikTok under American ownership.
The decision comes after Trump had previously extended the deadline twice, initially granting a 75-day reprieve in January and again in April. Trump's extension will allow the administration to work towards ensuring a deal is closed, providing assurance that American users' data is safe and secure. As it happens President Trump himself has gained more than 15 million followers on TikTok since he joined last year.
The extension has implications for TikTok's 170 million US users, who can continue to access the platform for now. Marketers and influencers in the promotional products industry have also breathed a sigh of relief, as they heavily rely on TikTok to bolster their brands and connect with target audiences. However, concerns over data security and national security risks remain, with Democratic senators arguing that Trump's executive order lacks legal authority. As reported by AP, Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, said that the Trump administration is once again “flouting the law and ignoring its own national security findings about the risks” posed by a China-controlled TikTok.
