Terrifying videos of a powerful earthquake that rocked Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula are flooding social media, showing chaotic scenes of residents screaming, buildings shaking violently, and people desperately evacuating homes. The raw, shaky footage captures the fear and confusion as one of the strongest earthquakes in recent memory struck the region.

Videos widely shared online show items falling from shelves, walls cracking, and alarm systems blaring as the 8.8 magnitude quake jolted the Pacific coast of Russia early Wednesday morning.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the quake hit 133 kilometres southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of about 74 kilometres. Due to its strength and shallow depth, it triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific, including in Japan, Hawaii, and several island territories.

The National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami watch for the entire state of Hawaii. Officials said waves as high as 3 meters (10 feet) above normal tide could affect coastal areas. Similar warnings were issued for the Russian Far East, parts of Japan, the Solomon Islands, Chile, and Ecuador.

Japan's meteorological agency reported a 30 cm (1-foot) tsunami already observed along its Pacific coast and warned of waves up to 3 meters potentially arriving in northern regions within half an hour of the alert.

One video reportedly filmed at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport shows violent vibrations shaking parts of the terminal building, though the authenticity of that footage has not yet been verified.

While the online videos have brought urgent global attention to the quake’s impact, authorities have cautioned that not all footage being shared has been verified. Several clips falsely claiming to show the Kamchatka earthquake were later identified as footage from past events, including viral videos from a previous earthquake in Myanmar.

Even so, the authentic videos are harrowing, showing just how vulnerable even the most remote areas can be to nature’s wrath. Emergency services in Russia have reported structural damage and ongoing evacuations near the quake’s epicentre, with residents bracing for possible aftershocks and tsunami impacts.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has stressed the need for immediate precautions. “Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property,” the centre said.
