Peshawar: Six terrorists were killed during a Counter Terrorism Department operation in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province as authorities intensified efforts to curb rising militant violence in the region.

Pakistan's Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) killed six terrorists during an operation in the Lower Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday. According to officials, the militants were allegedly involved in a recent attack on a police checkpoint and the killing of a police constable.

The operation was launched after intelligence inputs indicated the presence of a group of militants hiding in the hilly areas of Lower Dir. Security personnel, along with district police, moved to the location and attempted to arrest the suspects when they emerged from their hideouts.

Authorities said the militants opened fire on the police teams, triggering a prolonged exchange of gunfire. Security forces retaliated and later conducted a search operation in the area, during which six terrorists were found dead.

Officials recovered six Kalashnikov rifles and three hand grenades from the militants. The CTD identified the group as members of "Fitna al-Khawarij", a term used by Pakistani authorities for the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the CTD and provincial police for the successful operation. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police chief Zulfiqar Hameed said anti-terror operations would continue until militancy is eliminated from the province.

The operation comes amid growing security concerns across Pakistan. According to a recent assessment by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, the country's security situation deteriorated sharply in May 2026. The report recorded 128 terrorist attacks during the month, compared to 101 attacks in April, representing a 27 per cent increase.

Most of the violence was concentrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where security forces have faced persistent attacks from militant groups. Analysts say the latest figures highlight the continuing challenge posed by insurgent networks despite ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

The latest operation in Lower Dir underscores Pakistan's renewed push against militant groups as authorities seek to contain the surge in attacks and restore stability in conflict-affected regions.
