Moscow: The Moscow Kremlin confirmed on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had gifted a portrait of Donald Trump to the US president. According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, the portrait was personally commissioned by Putin and handed over to Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, during his visit to Moscow earlier this month. Peskov declined to provide additional details about the gift or its significance.

The existence of the portrait was first made public by Witkoff during an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson last week. Witkoff stated that Trump was “clearly touched” by the painting, describing it as “beautiful.” He added that Putin had given the portrait as a “gracious” gesture, recalling that the Russian leader had also expressed personal concern for Trump’s well-being.

During the interview, Witkoff shared that Putin had prayed for Trump last year after learning that the then-presidential candidate had survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania. “He was praying for his friend,” Witkoff recounted, noting that Putin’s remarks suggested a level of personal regard for Trump beyond political diplomacy.

The timing of the gift is notable, as Witkoff’s visit to Moscow coincided with diplomatic efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in Ukraine. Talks between US and Russian officials continued this week in Saudi Arabia, following separate meetings between American and Ukrainian negotiators. While the portrait itself may be symbolic, it arrives at a moment of heightened geopolitical tension, with the US and Russia engaged in complex discussions regarding the war.

Historical precedents and security concerns

This is not the first time Putin has presented a gift to a sitting US president. In 2018, during Trump’s first term in office, Putin gifted him a football at the Helsinki summit. The US Secret Service subsequently examined the ball for listening devices before Trump passed it on to his son. The precautionary measure was taken due to historical concerns over espionage through diplomatic gifts.

One of the most infamous incidents occurred in 1945 when Soviet schoolchildren presented a carving of the Great Seal of the United States to then-US Ambassador Averell Harriman. The carving, which hung in his office for six years, contained a hidden listening device that allowed Soviet intelligence to eavesdrop on sensitive diplomatic conversations until it was eventually discovered by the US State Department.

Given this history, questions have been raised over whether the portrait gifted by Putin has undergone any security inspections. As of now, there has been no official statement from the White House regarding the gift or whether it has been analysed for potential surveillance risks.

Putin’s gifts to US Presidents

Beyond Trump, Putin has also gifted items to previous US presidents. In 2021, he presented then-President Joe Biden with a $12,000 lacquer writing box and pen during their summit in Geneva. In 2013, he reportedly sent President Barack Obama porcelain plates and espresso cups. Additionally, in 2014, the Russian leader is said to have sent former President George H W Bush a portrait of himself on his 90th birthday.

While diplomatic gifts are customary between world leaders, they often carry symbolic significance and, in some cases, strategic messaging. The portrait of Trump, given during a period of US-Russia negotiations, adds another layer to the ongoing political dynamic between the two nations. Whether it was a simple gesture of goodwill or carries deeper implications remains to be seen.
