London: Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a "landmark" visit to the United Kingdom on Thursday, marked by significant strides in India-UK trade and economic relations, before departing for the Maldives, the second leg of his foreign tour.

During his UK visit from July 23-24, Prime Minister Modi met with British counterpart Keir Starmer at Chequers, where they witnessed the signing of the historic India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This landmark deal aims to significantly enhance bilateral trade, investment, and economic collaborations, fostering job creation in both economies. The leaders also adopted the India-UK Vision 2035 and agreed to negotiate a Double Contribution Convention to facilitate professionals and the service industry by reducing business costs.

A key highlight of the UK visit was Prime Minister Modi's meeting with King Charles III at Sandringham House. Modi presented King Charles with a tree sapling for his environmental initiative, "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" (a tree for Mother), inspiring people globally. They discussed various aspects of India-UK relations, including trade and investment post-CETA and Vision 2035, as well as shared passions for education, health, wellness (particularly Yoga and Ayurveda), environmental protection, and sustainability. PM Modi also expressed happiness over King Charles's recovery and invited him to pay a State Visit to India.

Following the successful UK engagements, Prime Minister Modi will fly to the Maldives for a State Visit from July 25-26, at the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. This visit coincides with the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives, where PM Modi will be the Guest of Honour, and also marks the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives diplomatic relations. This high-profile visit is seen as a crucial step to reset and strengthen India-Maldives relations, which had experienced strains in the recent past. During his stay, PM Modi will hold talks with President Muizzu to review progress on the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership.
