Oracle glitch brings nearly 50 US hospitals to a standstill for five days

A significant outage impacted 45 Community Health Systems (CHS) hospitals in the United States last week after Oracle engineers accidentally deleted critical storage data linked to a core patient database.
The disruption began on 23 April during scheduled maintenance, affecting access to electronic health records (EHR) and forcing affected facilities to switch to paper-based systems for five days.
CHS clarified that the failure was not the result of a cyberattack, but a human error during Oracle's routine maintenance. Downtime procedures were activated, and hospital staff operated without access to digital records. Despite the scale of the issue, CHS maintained that there was “no material impact” on patient care, praising its teams for their professionalism.
According to Becker’s Hospital Review, 45 out of CHS’s 72 hospitals were affected. CHS operates across 14 US states and relies on Oracle Health’s EHR platform for patient record management, appointments, and clinical operations.
Oracle engineers have since restored the system by rebuilding the deleted data storage and verifying the integrity of patient records. CHS confirmed that hospitals are gradually returning to full functionality.
This incident adds to Oracle’s growing challenges in the healthcare sector. Earlier, Oracle’s federal EHR platform suffered a nationwide outage, and the Department of Veterans Affairs continues to face unresolved problems from its Oracle-inherited EHR system, originally developed by Cerner, which Oracle acquired in 2022 for $28.3 billion.
The situation has intensified scrutiny over Oracle’s handling of digital healthcare infrastructure. Experts note that while digitisation improves efficiency, it also centralises risk — meaning even minor errors can have far-reaching consequences. The CHS case underscores the importance of robust oversight, backup systems, and fail-safes in the healthcare industry.
