Myanmar earthquake death toll surpasses 1000; atleast 2000 injured

Myanmar: The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Myanmar has exceeded 1000, the ruling junta confirmed on Saturday.
According to a statement from the junta’s information team, the 7.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday left 1002 people dead and 2,376 injured. The disaster has caused widespread destruction, with rescue efforts still underway.
High-rise collapses in Thailand
The impact of the earthquake was also felt in neighbouring Thailand, where at least six people lost their lives in Bangkok. A high-rise building under construction collapsed in the Thai capital, adding to the devastation caused by the tremors.
Epicentre near Mandalay, massive destruction reported
The earthquake struck at midday with its epicentre near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. The region has witnessed extensive damage, with buildings reduced to rubble and infrastructure severely affected. The quake was followed by strong aftershocks, including one that measured 6.4 in magnitude, further compounding the crisis.
State of emergency declared in 6 regions
In response to the widespread destruction, the Myanmar government has declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Mandalay. Authorities are working to provide aid to affected areas, with emergency services overwhelmed by the scale of the disaster.
With thousands injured, Myanmar’s government has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations, particularly in the worst-hit areas. Medical facilities are struggling to cope with the influx of injured victims, and there is a growing need for emergency medical supplies and assistance.
International support has begun to arrive, with China, Russia, and India dispatching rescue teams to assist with relief efforts. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has assured Myanmar of additional aid, as global efforts to support the affected communities intensify.
Rescue efforts ongoing amid devastation
Authorities and rescue teams continue to search for survivors amid the rubble. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and officials warn that the casualty figures may rise as recovery operations progress. The earthquake has left thousands homeless, and relief teams are racing against time to provide shelter, food, and medical assistance to those in need.
