A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday morning, shaking buildings, sparking tsunami alerts across the Pacific, and drawing global comparisons to some of the most powerful seismic events in history.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at a depth of 74 km, with the epicenter located 133 kilometers southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The quake triggered tsunami warnings in Russia, Japan, Hawaii, and several Pacific territories. While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, early footage shows intense shaking, fallen objects, and widespread evacuations in affected regions.

With a preliminary magnitude of 8.8, this earthquake now ranks among the largest ever recorded, joining a list of historic quakes that have reshaped coastlines, claimed thousands of lives, and changed seismic science forever.
