Minneapolis woke up to chaos and outrage on Wednesday after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a 37-year-old woman during a sweeping federal immigration operation, triggering furious protests and a bitter clash between local leaders and the Trump administration.

The shooting unfolded just after 9.30 am in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, only a mile from the site where George Floyd was murdered by police in 2020. Witness videos show ICE agents confronting the woman as she sat in her SUV, blocking the road.

Moments later, as the vehicle began moving, an officer fired at least two shots at close range, striking her in the head. She died at the scene, in front of a family member.

Federal officials immediately defended the shooting. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called it an act of self-defense, claiming the woman attempted to ram ICE officers. President Donald Trump echoed the claim online, accusing the woman of violence and backing ICE’s aggressive operations.

But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey flatly rejected that narrative after viewing the video. Calling the shooting “reckless, unnecessary, and preventable,” Frey accused federal authorities of lying and inflaming tensions. “What they’re doing is sowing chaos — and in this case, killing people,” he said, demanding ICE leave the city.

By afternoon, hundreds of protesters flooded the area, chanting “ICE out of Minnesota” and confronting officers. Candlelight vigils followed by nightfall, with mourners describing the killing as state violence, not law enforcement.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged calm but warned the situation was “predictable and avoidable,” saying the National Guard could be deployed if unrest escalates. Meanwhile, Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar condemned the shooting as an example of unchecked federal force.

The incident marks a grim escalation in Trump-era immigration crackdowns, with Minneapolis now the latest flashpoint in a nation already on edge — and demanding answers.
