Rally shooter a 'monster', says Melania Trump

Washington: Former First Lady Melania Trump condemned the recent assassination attempt on her husband, Donald Trump, labelling the gunman as a "monster" in a statement shared on X. Melania expressed gratitude to the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials who courageously protected Donald during the shooting at his campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.
"A monster who saw my husband as an unfeeling political machine tried to extinguish Donald's passion — his laughter, creativity, love of music, and inspiration," Melania Trump said.
Reflecting on the moment when the violent bullet struck Donald, she expressed the profound realisation that both her life and that of their 18-year-old son Barron were on the verge of drastic change.
"I am grateful to the brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their lives to protect my husband," Melania Trump said.
Donald Trump mentioned that he was struck in the ear during the incident.
The shooter and a bystander were killed, while two spectators were critically injured.
Melania Trump extended her deepest sympathy to the families of the victims, acknowledging the strength required to endure such a tragic situation.
"Your need to summon your inner strength for such a terrible reason saddens me," she said.
Melania, 54, has had little involvement in her husband's White House campaign, having not attended a single Trump rally and rarely appearing with him in public.
She has also been largely absent during the former president's multiple court appearances in recent months as he battles legal cases against him and ramps up his 2024 election campaign. AFP
