Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned on Monday, amid growing diplomatic tensions with India and internal controversies, including the Nijjar case and the Student Parent Program. His resignation follows a series of events, including a recent Canadian government clarification regarding allegations linking Indian officials—Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval—to criminal activities in Canada. The statement, issued by Nathalie G. Drouin, Deputy Clerk of the Privy Council, stressed that there was no evidence to support these allegations, aiming to dispel speculation.

The tensions escalated after Trudeau’s accusations that India was conducting covert operations on Canadian soil. In particular, the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023, allegedly involving Indian agents, has strained relations. Trudeau claimed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) had credible evidence linking Indian agents to the murder, a charge that India vehemently denies. The controversy deepened with remarks made by Canadian officials, including Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs David Morrison, who allegedly implicated India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah in targeting pro-Khalistan activists in Canada.

Additionally, the government's handling of the Student Parent Program, which faced criticism from Canadian nationals and the Indian diaspora, added to Trudeau's troubles. India protested these developments, further exacerbating diplomatic tensions. The culmination of these events ultimately led to Trudeau's resignation. Here's a look at the major events that unfolded in the recent years.
