Seattle:A Japan Airlines plane taxiing at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport struck the tail of a parked Delta Air Lines aircraft Wednesday morning, airport officials said. No injuries were reported, and passengers from both flights were safely deplaned.

The incident occurred around 10:17 a.m. when Japan Airlines flight 68, a Boeing 787 arriving from Tokyo’s Narita International Airport, made contact with the tail of Delta flight 1921, airport officials said in a statement on X.

Japan Airlines confirmed in an emailed statement that the right wingtip of its aircraft clipped the Delta plane while taxiing after arrival. The airline said all 172 passengers and 13 crew members onboard were safe.

Delta spokesperson Samantha Moore Facteau said in an email that the airline’s Boeing 737 was stationary, waiting to have ice removed from its exterior, when the wingtip of another aircraft reportedly struck its tail. She said deicing, which can take place before a plane taxis to the runway, was in progress at the time.

The Delta flight was bound for Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, with 142 passengers onboard. They were transferred to another aircraft, and no injuries were reported among passengers or crew, Facteau said.

Jason Chan, a passenger on the Delta flight, said the impact caused the plane to “jiggle back and forth” and shake slightly before the captain informed them of the collision. “The whole incident seemed surreal,” Chan said, adding that passengers remained calm before being bused back to the terminal.

Airport officials said the incident had minimal impact on operations since it occurred on a taxi lane. Response crews worked to move both aircraft off the ramp taxiway.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the collision, spokesperson Sam Lichtman said in an emailed statement.
