In a horrifying case that has stunned the community, a 32-year-old house cleaner was shot dead after mistakenly arriving at the wrong home in an Indianapolis suburb early Wednesday morning.

Police identified the victim as Maria Florinda Rios Perez, a mother of four originally from Guatemala. She died in the arms of her husband, Mauricio Velazquez, on the front porch of a Whitestown residence just before 7 am local time.

Authorities say the couple had gone to what they believed was a client’s home for cleaning work when a homeowner inside opened fire — shooting through the closed door without confirming who was outside.

“They should’ve called the police first instead of just shooting out of nowhere like that,” Velazquez told CBS affiliate WTTV through an interpreter.

The Boone County Prosecutor’s Office is now reviewing the case to determine whether criminal charges will be filed. Police have not identified the shooter, calling it a “complex, delicate, and evolving investigation.”

Officials have urged patience and warned against the “spread of misinformation online”, as outrage mounts over yet another shooting sparked by mistaken identity.

Boone County prosecutor Kent Eastwood said the case is legally complicated due to Indiana’s stand-your-ground law, which allows homeowners to use deadly force if they believe they are in danger.

Similar tragedies have recently made headlines across the US — including the 2023 case of 16-year-old Ralph Yarl in Missouri and 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis in New York — both shot after approaching the wrong address.

For Velazquez, the grief is unbearable. Standing beside a photo of his wife surrounded by flowers and candles, he demanded justice:

“She was just doing her job. She didn’t deserve to die like this.”
