Muzzafarabad [PoJK] :Violent clashes broke out in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), after Pakistani security forces opened fire on peaceful protesters demanding the Self-Rule Charter of Demands. According to sources, over half a dozen people have died and several others sustained serious injuries during the past three days.

Initially peaceful, the protests have now spread across several districts of PoJK. Shops, businesses, and transport services remain shut, underlining widespread public anger at Islamabad’s response. The administration has enforced an indefinite lockdown following last week’s demonstrations led by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC).

Charter of demands

The demonstrations centre on a 38-point charter put forward by the JKJAAC. The protesters’ demands include the abolition of reserved legislative seats in PoJK, scrapping the 12 seats set aside for Kashmiri refugees settled in Pakistan, and wider economic relief measures.

Demands also include slashing electricity tariffs, providing subsidised wheat flour, ending perks for government officials, and ensuring free education and healthcare facilities.

Shutdown of internet and crackdown

Internet services have been suspended across the region. Clashes between protesters and security forces have been reported in several districts, with demonstrators defying crackdowns and breaking through blockades to enter Muzaffarabad.

Tensions in Dudyal, Mirpur

In Dudyal, Mirpur, the Action Committee declared that the body of a protester would not be buried until authorities conceded to their demands. Security forces were meanwhile seen clearing bridges in an attempt to disrupt the march.

Regional mobilisation

From Mirpur to Kotli and Muzaffarabad, the JKJAAC has mobilised residents in large rallies and demonstrations, reflecting unprecedented unity in the fight for rights.

Widespread condemnation

Rights activists, political figures, and diaspora leaders condemned what they described as systematic oppression by Pakistani authorities in PoJK. They pledged their continued support for the people’s struggle.
