HMS Dragon sails for Cyprus: UK deploys ‘Sea Viper’ destroyer after RAF Akrotiri drone attack

Portsmouth: The Royal Navy guided-missile destroyer HMS Dragon departed Portsmouth Harbour on Tuesday, beginning a high-stakes deployment to the eastern Mediterranean following an aerial assault on British sovereign territory in Cyprus.

The British government ordered the vessel’s mobilisation in direct response to a drone strike targeting RAF Akrotiri, a critical Royal Air Force installation on the Mediterranean island. The deployment is intended to bolster regional defences and protect British assets as the conflict between U.S.-Israeli forces and Iran continues to expand across the Levant.

A cornerstone of the United Kingdom’s maritime air defence, the HMS Dragon is equipped with the advanced Sea Viper missile system. The sophisticated weaponry is capable of discharging eight missiles in less than 10 seconds and maintains the technical capacity to track and guide as many as 16 projectiles at once.

The ship’s departure comes amid a broader surge in Western naval activity in the region, aimed at deterring further strikes by Iranian-backed groups and ensuring the security of strategic military hubs like Cyprus.
