Wild footage shows moments before street racer ploughs into crowded Florida LGBTQ+ bar, killing 4

Tampa, Fla.: A chilling video has emerged capturing the moments before a speeding car being chased by police lost control and slammed into a crowded gay bar in Tampa’s historic Ybor City district early Saturday, killing four people and injuring more than a dozen others.
According to police, the crash occurred outside Bradley’s on 7th – a popular LGBTQ+ venue – shortly after 12:30 am, when a silver Toyota Camry careened into pedestrians gathered on the bar’s patio. The incident unfolded minutes before a scheduled drag performance, as partygoers filled the dancefloor and sidewalks.
Security footage from the scene shows the car races through an intersection and crashes into the crowd. The tragic incident claimed three lives at the scene, while a fourth victim succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. At least 13 others sustained injuries, with two reported to be in critical condition. The tattoo-riddled alleged speed racer was being held without bond.
Police chase before the crash
Tampa police said the deadly sequence began when an air patrol unit spotted two vehicles street racing along Hillsborough Avenue at about 12:40 am. Officers pursued one of the cars – the silver sedan later identified as being driven by 22-year-old Silas Sampson – after the vehicles went in separate directions.
The Florida Highway Patrol attempted a precision immobilisation technique (PIT), a manoeuvre that involves nudging the rear fender of a fleeing vehicle to make it spin out, but it failed. Officers then “disengaged” from the pursuit as Sampson sped toward downtown. Moments later, the vehicle crashed into the crowd outside Bradley’s.
Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw called the event a “senseless tragedy.”
“What happened this morning was a senseless tragedy,” Bercaw said in a statement. “Our hearts are with the loved ones of the victims and all those who were impacted.”
Officials confirmed that all 15 victims were adults aged over 20. Three were pronounced dead at the scene, and a fourth died in hospital.
Charges against the driver
Silas Sampson, 22 from Dade City, was born on May 1, 2003, and has been identified by authorities as a Black male. Investigators said his car had been spotted street racing near Hillsborough Avenue and 22nd Street prior to the fatal crash.
Sampson was arrested at the scene and later booked into the Hillsborough County Jail. Court records show he faces four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death – all first-degree felonies. No attorney has been listed for him.
Florida Highway Patrol Sergeant Steve Gaskins said troopers had “backed off” their pursuit before the collision occurred.
Debate over police chases
The tragedy has reignited debate over the use of high-speed police pursuits. In recent years, several states and local departments have sought to limit such chases to reduce risks to officers and bystanders.
A 2023 study funded by the U.S. Justice Department recommended that high-speed pursuits be used sparingly, stating that “the danger to suspects, officers and bystanders often outweighs the immediate need to take someone into custody.”
