Did Trump really meet Putin or was it just a perky body double? Alaska summit sparks doppelgänger theories

A bizarre conspiracy theory has erupted online after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, with claims circulating that the leader never set foot on American soil himself. Instead, social media users allege, the Kremlin dispatched one of Putin’s supposed body doubles.

The speculation, which gained momentum after the August 15 summit, is rooted in observations of Putin’s face and mannerisms. Commentators argued that the man who appeared alongside Trump had “fuller cheekbones,” looked more cheerful than the Russian president usually does, and even displayed a more animated personality during the press conference. One user on X wrote, “Its literally not even the real Putin. They didnt even send the good double, they sent ‘Jovial Putin,’ the expendable one that usually just makes minor public appearances and went to visit Kim in NK. Look at that hairline and those cheek fillers.”

Other posts referred to the stand-in as Putin’s “high-energy double,” jokingly nicknaming him “Mr Magoo Putin.”

Another person added: “Definite it was a Putin doubler. Look at the smooth forehead. Yesterday it was filled with wrinkles.”

Even so, online commentators weren’t persuaded the real Putin had appeared. One user wrote, “Holy shit, they didn't even send the real Putin.” Another speculated that Trump might meet the actual Russian president only behind closed doors, adding that the figure in Alaska walked “too briskly” and appeared “too tall beside Trump.”

Some claimed that Putin’s alleged doubles undergo surgery to resemble him as closely as possible, but subtle differences—particularly in his unique walk—are said to give them away. The Russian president is known for his “gunslinger gait,” where his right arm stays unusually stiff by his side while his left swings freely. Neurologists attribute the movement not to a medical condition but to KGB training, where operatives were taught to keep their weapon hand close to the chest or holster for rapid response.

Putin himself has long denied the existence of body doubles. In 2020, he admitted the idea was floated in the early 2000s but insisted he “refused doubles.” Still, conspiracy theorists remain convinced that a rotating cast of lookalikes makes public appearances in his place.

Additionally, during his Friday summit with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s bodyguards were reportedly carrying a “poop suitcase” to collect his faecal waste, according to The Express US. The unusual security measure is said to prevent foreign powers from gaining information about the Russian leader’s health. Reports, citing investigative journalists Regis Gente and Mikhail Rubin in the French publication Paris Match, suggest that members of Putin’s Federal Protection Service (FPS) collect his excrement, store it in special bags, and transport it back to Russia in dedicated briefcases.

During the summit, strict security protocols were observed, with Putin surrounded by bodyguards and additional measures taken to safeguard both him and sensitive Russian intelligence. Former BBC journalist Farida Rustamova added that Putin has reportedly maintained this practice since 1999, often using private or portable toilets on international trips to ensure discretion. These claims have further intensified speculation about the 72-year-old leader’s health, with unverified reports suggesting conditions such as cancer or Parkinson’s disease.

The Alaska summit, which lasted nearly three hours, included face-to-face talks and a joint press conference. While no ceasefire emerged from the discussions on the Russia-Ukraine war, both leaders described the exchange as productive. Trump said, “We had an extremely productive meeting and many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left.”
