Air Canada flight catches fire during emergency landing at Halifax airport| WATCH

Halifax: Air Canada Flight 2259 made a dramatic emergency landing on Saturday night at Halifax Stanfield International Airport, after a broken landing gear caused one of the aircraft’s wings to scrape along the runway, igniting a fire. The incident temporarily shut down the airport as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

The flight, which had arrived from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, was attempting to land when the mechanical failure occurred. As the plane touched down, one of its landing gears malfunctioned, causing the aircraft to tilt at an alarming 20-degree angle. According to a passenger on board, the wing scraped along the pavement, and what sounded like a crash followed. The passenger also noted that it appeared the plane’s engine may have been involved in the scrape.

"The plane started to tilt at about a 20-degree angle to the left, and as that happened, we heard a loud noise almost like a crash as the wing scraped along the pavement, along with what I presume was the engine," the passenger described.

As the plane skidded down the runway, a fire ignited from the damaged wing, but quick action from the flight crew and emergency responders helped contain the flames. Despite the harrowing situation, all passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft. Paramedics assessed the passengers in a nearby hangar, and no serious injuries were reported.

While the airline has not yet disclosed the exact number of passengers on board, estimates suggest the aircraft’s capacity was around 80 people, with 20 rows of seats and two seats on either side of the aisle. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the landing gear failure.
