Japan’s Honshu hit by 6.2-magnitude quake, authorities monitoring situation

Tokyo: A strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck off the east coast of Japan’s largest and most populous island, Honshu, on Thursday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences reported. The tremor occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), raising concerns among local authorities and residents.

The situation is being closely monitored, and Japanese officials are assessing the need for additional public safety measures or emergency responses to ensure community safety.

This follows a 3-magnitude earthquake on Japan’s seismic intensity scale of 7 that jolted the Kansai region on Wednesday evening, affecting parts of Kyoto and Hyogo prefectures, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Fortunately, no tsunami advisories were issued for either incident.

Seismologists continue to track aftershocks and advise residents in affected regions to remain alert, while disaster management teams are on standby across Honshu.
