Genetic screening for couples before marriage made mandatory in UAE

Abu Dhabi: A new law mandating premarital genetic testing for all UAE citizens intending to marry has come into effect. As stated by authorities from the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, this initiative aims to reduce the prevalence of genetic disorders, protect future generations, and empower individuals preparing for marriage to make informed health decisions.
The testing will screen for 570 genes associated with over 840 genetic disorders. Authorities require that individuals complete testing at least 14 days before their wedding to ensure timely results.
Brides and grooms will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns with health specialists and genetic counselors. This law has been implemented following the recognition of the success of the genetic testing program, which was initially launched as a pilot in 2022.
