Kuwait fire tragedy case: Locked terrace forced people to jump off balconies; 3 arrests so far

Two days after the devastating blaze in Kuwait's Mangaf city claimed at least 50 lives, three individuals have been nabbed by the authorities in connection with the case. Among those arrested are the owner of the six-storeyed building, reportedly a Kuwaiti national, along with two non-residents, including the building's security guard and a company official.
Preliminary findings from the Kuwaiti fire force department's investigation suggest that the fire was ignited due to short circuit. Additionally, the overcrowding of the building is cited as a contributing factor to the high death toll. Investigators told Mathrubhumi News that there were a number of factors that led to the situation turning grim after the fire broke out.
The security guard, who has been arrested, was deployed on the ground floor where the fire broke out. Compounding the situation, approximately 21 gas cylinders were stored nearby, worsening the fire. The building officials shut down the lift operations, leaving occupants on upper floors with no recourse but to head downstairs. But with smoke enveloping the staircase, many tried to run towards the terrace, the doors of which were locked. That left some with no option but to jump out of balconies.
Reports indicate that the majority of fatalities were due to suffocation rather than direct exposure to flames. The building owner has been charged with housing more people than permitted in the building, which is primarily the reason behind the high toll. While initial investigations have concluded, a comprehensive inquiry is ongoing.
In a related development, Kuwait's Foreign Minister revealed an additional death. However, the identity of the person is yet to be ascertained. Presently, 33 people are receiving medical treatment across five hospitals, out of which the condition of two is stated to be critical. Efforts to repatriate the deceased have been facilitated by various departments. Kuwait's Emir, Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has already vowed to take stern action against those responsible for the tragedy and has announced financial assistance for the victims.
