New traffic rules in UAE: Driving licence available at 17; strict penalties imposed

UAE has introduced new traffic rules that aim to enhance road safety and enforce stricter penalties for violations. Individuals can now obtain a driving licence at the age of 17. However, there are major consequences for breaking the law.
A special permit is now required for transporting dangerous goods. Drivers must follow authorities’ instructions when travelling through flood-prone areas; failing to do so may result in severe legal action.
Penalties imposed
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can lead to fines of up to AED 2,00,000 and imprisonment. For repeat offenders, harsher penalties, including cancellation of driving licence, will be enforced.
If a driver causes an accident and fails to stop, they could face fines between AED 50,000 and AED 1,00,000, along with a mandatory minimum prison sentence of two years. Other violations, such as not reporting an accident to the police, providing inaccurate information, or fleeing from police, will also incur penalties.
Driving with a revoked licence will result in a fine of AED 10,000 and a potential jail term of up to three months. Drivers with unapproved foreign licences can face fines ranging from AED 2,000 to AED 10,000. Repeat violations of these laws may result in fines between AED 5,000 and AED 50,000.
For those caught driving without a valid licence, first-time offenders will be fined between AED 5,000 and AED 50,000. Repeat offenders may face fines from AED 20,000 to AED 100,000. In cases where a driver’s negligence leads to a fatal accident, the fines will not be less than AED 50,000, and imprisonment may also apply.
Officials have also warned that misuse of vehicle number plates can result in imprisonment and fines of AED 20,000.
