Travelling with kids? IndiGo revises infant, unaccompanied minor and baggage charges

For parents flying with a baby, the cost of an air ticket is set to rise even before a child gets their own seat.

IndiGo has increased its infant travel fee by Rs 1,000, taking the charge from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, while also revising fees for unaccompanied minors, excess baggage and priority services.

The latest changes affect several ancillary services offered by the airline and could push up the total cost of travel for passengers, particularly families travelling with young children.

Under IndiGo's existing rules, infants aged between three days and two years can travel with an accompanying adult without being assigned a separate seat. However, the infant must still be included in the booking and the applicable infant fee has to be paid.

That fee has now been revised upwards from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000.

For families travelling with babies, the Rs 1,000 increase will therefore be added to the overall cost of the journey.

The airline has also raised charges for children travelling without an accompanying adult.

For domestic flights, the unaccompanied minor fee for children aged between five and 12 years has gone up from Rs 5,000 to Rs 5,999.

On international flights, the same service will now cost Rs 12,999.

Priority services become costlier

Passengers opting for priority check-in and boarding will also have to pay more for the service on domestic flights.

The charge has been increased from Rs 500 to Rs 650 for domestic travel. For international flights, the priority service charge is Rs 850 per sector.

The airline has simultaneously revised its excess baggage fee. Passengers exceeding their permitted baggage allowance will now be charged Rs 800 per kg, compared with the earlier rate of Rs 700 per kg.

That means every additional kilogram of baggage will cost passengers Rs 100 more under the revised charge.

The changes cover multiple ancillary services rather than the base airfare alone. They include charges related to infants, unaccompanied minors, priority services and excess baggage.

For passengers travelling with children or carrying additional luggage, these additional costs could therefore make a noticeable difference to the final amount payable at the time of booking or travel.

The latest revisions have been described in reports as part of IndiGo's routine review of charges for ancillary services.
