Shashi Tharoor takes a dig at Centre asking GST on Paneer Butter Masala

Kerala MP Shashi Tharoor, who often comes up with intriguing tweets, has posted yet another one mocking the hike of Goods and Services Tax on certain essential commodities. 

Through his recent tweet, Shashi Tharoor condemned the Centre’s move to impose GST on essential food items, including paneer and butter, by posting a forwarded meme he received in WhatsApp. 

“GST on paneer: 5 per cent, GST on butter: 12 per cent, GST on Masala: 5 percent…Now Maths Question: Calculate the GST on Paneer Butter Masala?...,” the meme read.   

By posting the meme, Thiruvananthapuram MP wrote, “I don't know who comes up with these brilliant WhatsApp forwards but this one skewers the folly of the GST as few jokes have!”

The recommendations of 47th GST council meeting came into effect from July 18, which led to a surge in the price of essential items nationwide. A GST of 5 per cent will be induced for cereals and pulses if the commodities got branded and packed into unit containers. 

Several adjournments were recorded in both the houses of parliament as the opposition members staged protests against the price rise of many commodities.
