Tata Trusts: Noel Tata’s son Neville appointed trustee amid governance reshuffle

Neville Tata, son of Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata, has been appointed as a trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust for a period of three years. The appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees and comes as part of broader changes within the management of the Tata family’s philanthropic and shareholding arms.

Neville, 32, joined his father’s business, Trent, in 2016 and has been leading the retail clothing chain Zudio. Under his leadership, the brand has expanded significantly, and his induction into the trust is widely seen as a move by Noel Tata to consolidate influence over the trusts holding the Tata family name.

The appointment follows the resolution of a long-standing internal dispute between two factions within the Tata Trusts. One faction was led by Noel Tata, and the other was associated with the late Ratan Tata’s confidante, Mehli Mistry. Mistry, who was expected to challenge the decisions legally, did not pursue a legal course, clearing the way for the new appointments.

Along with Neville Tata, the board also inducted Bhaskar Bhat, a veteran of the Tata Group who has held leadership positions including at Titan and as a brand custodian. Venu Srinivasan was appointed as a trustee and designated vice chairman of the trust for a three-year term. His tenure reflects recent regulatory changes by the Maharashtra government, which now limit trustee appointments to fixed terms rather than for life.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust holds 27.98% of Tata Sons, the parent company of the conglomerate. As the single-largest shareholder, the trust plays a key role in corporate governance and decision-making within Tata Sons. The new appointments ensure that both experienced and next-generation leadership oversee the trust’s operations and responsibilities, maintaining continuity while complying with legal and regulatory requirements.

These changes mark a significant step in the management of the Tata family’s philanthropic and business legacy, highlighting the trust’s ongoing role in shaping the governance of one of India’s largest conglomerates.
